Programme Syllabus

A. CLINICAL MEDICINE: SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING AND PRESENTATIONS

The following is the list of topics for case studies and topic reviews. These will be assessed every six months. Use of MEDLINE to source for current information titles and the use of key journal papers in their readings is encouraged.

CARE OF CHRONIC MEDICAL CONDITIONS, PALLIATIVE AND TERMINAL CARE
- Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma, coronary heart disease, arthritis, stroke, Parkinson's disease and multi-system disease
- Lung, colon, breast and other common cancers
- Palliative care, Terminal care and AMD

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH
- Acute medical problems
- Emergency care
- Chronic medical problems
- Disease prevention and health promotion
- Adolescent issues
- Ethical and social issues

ADULT HEALTH INCLUDING ISSUES OF WORK AND TRAVEL
- Acute medical problems
- Emergency care
- Chronic medical problems
- Disease prevention and health promotion
- Occupational issues
- Travel medicine
- Ethical and social issues

WOMEN'S HEALTH
- Acute medical problems
- Emergency care
- Chronic medical problems e.g. endometriosis, malignancy

ELDERLY HEALTH
- Giants of geriatrics - iatrogenic problems, instability, incontinence and intellectual failure

B. SKILLS TRAINING
These are short week-end courses. These may be conducted as Asia-Pacific regional courses.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION SHORT COURSE
- Teaching theories and philosophy --the adult learning process, portfolio-based learning, managing the learner
- Curriculum planning - aims, objectives, syllabus development, teaching methods, time-tabling and teaching resource planning
- The Workshop
- The Small group
- One-to-one teaching - Clinical skills demonstration, random case analysis,
- The Lecture and presentation skills
- Formative assessment (the learner's progress and feedback) and summative assessment (certification)
- Reflection in learning and teaching

CLINICAL AUDIT SHORT COURSE
- The concept of total quality management (TQM) and continuing improvement
- Clinical audit and audit cycle
- Running an audit project

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY SHORT COURSE
- Concept of critical reading and methodology
- Evidence based medicine
- Research designs and usefulness
- Critical reading exercises
- Research design exercises

ELECTIVE CLINICAL SHORT COURSE
- One elective clinical short course


C. TEACHING

Teaching responsibility to FM trainee tutorial group for 10 sessions in each six month semester.


D. OTHER ACTIVITIES

Complete one research and/or acquire added clinical competence in a specific area of family medicine within the 2 years. The scope of this activity will be decided upon at the beginning of the 2-year period.


E. LOGBOOK AND ASSESSMENTS

The logbook should be kept up-to-date at all times. A review of it by the Mentor will be conducted every six months. At the end of the two years, the Censors' Board will review the whole logbook at the exit interview.
