Programme A Details

The aim of the MMed (FM) is to train an echelon of family physicians who will be on par with the hospital specialists and be able to take on the role of leaders, trainers, and administrators in family medicine development.

Aims and Objectives:

The overall training objective is to produce a professional and competent family physician that has the following qualities (as defined in the Family Medicine Training Logbook):

• Able to practice competently and independently on his/her own
• Possess the necessary skills to set up and maintain a practice either as solo or group practice
• Provide good primary care with emphasis on health promotion, health education, disease prevention, and chronic disease management. This would result in better primary care, appropriate referral and usage of specialist services, better health for the nation and reduce health care cost.
• Perform the role as a doctor, health care coordinator, manager, teacher
• Able to pursue continuing professional development on his/her own and in accordance to the changing practice trends and advances

Eligibility:

• Full or conditional registration with SMC or temporary registered with at least 1 year of working experience in public hospital upon application deadline
• Successful in MOH BST Selection Exercise

Course Overview:

Programme A consists of:

• Hospital rotation postings from the defined list (See under eligibility criteria for MMed Examination) relevant to family practice in the first two years.
• Family medicine modular course - 8 modules of distance learning and quarterly workshops in the first 2 years. Course syllabus is the same as those of the GDFM trainees.
• Structured family medicine training during the polyclinic posting.
• During the hospital rotation years – the trainee is supervised by a
  mentor in the hospital department. Training progress is recorded in the
  FM Logbook.

• Attachments to General practice clinics and Health Promotion Board’s Youth Health Division.
• Weekly small group tutorials at Cluster Polyclinics – 30 per year.
• Combined teaching sessions conducted as a tripartite effort of the FM tutors from the two Polyclinic clusters, the University, and private practice – 10 per year.
• 2 Weeks Advanced FM course where foreign experts were brought in to impart his / her knowledge.

Other courses:

• MMed FM Revision Course - A 2-week full-time MMed Revision Course in FM, usually in August.

Mmed (Programme A) Examinations:


The eligibility criteria for the MMed (FM) Examination are as follows:

1. 1 year of compulsory core skills posting which includes (Core Skills)

2. 6 Months Medicine Posting (either 3 months each at any 2 of the listed or 6 months in designated hospital department) (Medicine)

Rheumatology
Haemotology
Oncology
Family Medicine and Continuing Care

(6 months posting that are accepted)

3. 3 Months Surgery Posting (one of the listed) (Surgery)

5. 1 year Polyclinic Posting; or 6 months Polyclinic Posting with 6 months of Optional postings from the above departments which the trainee has not been rotated to.

6. Satisfactory formative learning as reflected in the entries and reports in the MMed logbook

7. Complete a record of a log of one week’s attendance, keep comprehensive record of 5 case commentaries, and conduct and write up an audit project.
